Big Sur, Ventana Wilderness Retreat + Gardens

Bordering the Ventana Wilderness, our friend and client had a homestead and a vision for his Big Sur retreat.  He wanted an off-the-grid organic garden and retreat destination to share with kindred spirits.  He wished to tread lightly on the land while growing food sustainably, providing for the retreat and the locals, including nearby Tassajara Hot Springs.

With this in mind, we were able to design thoughtfully – and integrate carefully – several modestly-sized structures to support his vision.  For the ultimate Big Sur retreat, we began with a streamlined greenhouse + mechanicals,  terraced into the hillside,  with passive and active solar/ rock bed technology to assist with moderating year-round temperatures and humidity.

Our extensive design Program further included a Sleeping Tower, the Bath House (showcasing austere luxury), a covered outdoor Kitchen dually serving as washing and boxing center for the garden bounty and a solar warmed swimming pool/ fire reservoir.
